Expertise

I've been a tutor for High School students for over 10 years, tutoring in all STEM (biology, chemistry, physics and math) subjects. I have also taught 2 entry level, undergraduate classes in the biological sciences at MIT and while I was there, I was a direct mentor to two undergraduate laboratory assistants. When it comes to teaching science, my philosophy is that it can be made interesting and engaging if we just approach it as a 'story' rather than a list of facts to memorize. It's been fascinating to see people who 'hated science' and were 'no good at it' learn to really enjoy it!

I am also a native bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish without an accent. I've really enjoyed helping language learners get to the next level with their Spanish.

Teaching Methods

When it comes to science and math- I think that many students have a pre-concieved notion of their abilities, usually judged by how well they were able to understand their teacher or read the textbook. I think that with an engaging teacher who really understands the material explaining how the definitions fit together, most students start to enjoy science, or, at the very least, stop hating it.

I employ a student-guided methodology, allowing students to start the lesson with their pressing questions which then leads to the core of the concept at hand. Years of expertise have taught me the 'tricky' points in a lesson and I preempt these and address them before the confusion has been made.

I was an intern of Ana's at Celmatix during the summer of 2015, and I can truly say that Ana made my internship experience the best experience I could have asked for. I came into the company not knowing much about what the company did, so on the first day, I was quite nervous and did not know what to expect. Ana could not have transitioned me in a better way. She explained the work that I would be doing in a very clear, visual way on paper, and showed me start to finish the process that I would be following. She stationed me right next to her for the first few weeks of my internship, so that whenever I had any questions, she would be extremely accessible. Ana always took time out of her schedule to help me, and to help her other coworkers at Celmatix. One aspect of Ana's teaching method that I valued was her positive feedback. On my second day of work, after I had read a few journal articles and recorded information, Ana emailed the entire science team at Celmatix telling them about the wonderful work I had done. Her recognition motivated me to continue doing my best work. Ana is an excellent teacher. Beyond her teaching skills, she is just a wonderful person. She always makes you feel comfortable, she has a great sense of humor, and she genuinely cares. I would recommend Ana as a tutor without hesitation!

Ana is a wonderful tutor! She helped me actually understand the Krebs Cycle by explaining why things happen instead of just memorizing it - it made it so much easier. She also explained how people apply the things I needed to learn, and potential careers in biology. It was really cool to see how much she loves this stuff! - A grateful student

Ana has a unique way of breaking down difficult and dry material into comprehensible and fun lessons. She has tutored me in geometry, AP calculus, AP biology and physics and has also edited many of my English essays. Her passion for learning and engaging different types of learners is contagious! I am have a feeling I will also be requesting her help when I tackle Spanish next semester : )
