Expertise

This will be my fourth year teaching in the Boston Public Schools. I teach both AP and 12th grade honors courses and special education and reading intervention classes.
Designing interventions for students at both ends of the learning spectrum has allowed me to compile a range of intervention strategies.
Prior to teaching in the public schools, I taught undergraduate writing and literature courses for seven years while in graduate school.

Teaching Methods

While some people have an easier time reading and writing, these skills take time and practice to learn.
The first step to effective teaching is measuring a students skills and figuring out how they learn best. The next step is creating a roadmap. What is our learning destination and how can we best arrive there?
While I will draw from more than a decade of lesson plans and professional development experiences, our tutoring lessons will be designed individually for you. The goal will always be to provide the guidance and resources needed to succeed.

Relationship: Educator

I have had the pleasure of working with Chris over the past three years. Most recently we worked together to plan the AP English Literature curriculum to teach at our respective high schools. Chris crafts engaging lessons that often include art and multimedia in an effort to ensure that students appreciate how the literature they read in his classroom is relevant to their own lives by providing context. This was especially true throughout the development of William Shakespeare's King Lear Unit. Chris would have students examine works of art and other secondary material to give students background information to complete a deeper reading of the text. In addition to his creativity, students enjoy working with Chris' positive attitude and bubbly personality, making him a true pleasure to work with.

I have worked with Chris as a fellow high school English teacher. We have co-planned many units and lessons as well as college-readiness workshops and family events. Chris is a thoughtful educator who easily helps students make connections to the material they are studying. Chris uses his deep knowledge of language and literature along with his sense of humor to engage teenagers with challenging material. He excels at explaining complex concepts clearly and in helping students develop new approaches to reading closely and writing more clearly. Chris is even able to engage students with typically dry topics, such as grammar. He planned a competitive tournament that help students learn and apply rules for correct comma usage and students actually enjoyed learning about commas because the activity Chris designed with exploratory and fun, but also helped students learn and understand sentence structure more deeply. Finally, Chris does a fantastic job tracking students' progress and sharing this information with students. I think students love Chris' teaching because they can see themselves making progress.
