Expertise

I have acquired a deep respect for academic teaching - a special interest in serving people and helping them stay confident, happy, and productive - and an enthusiasm for intellectual challenges.

I have received a strong scientific foundation in Organic Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy and Physiology from my schooling at NYU.

I have been independently researching epilepsy and schizophrenia using pluripotent stem cells in the lab of Dr. Paul Kenny, head of the Department of Pharmacology and System Therapeutics at Mount Sinai Hospital. I implement techniques such as PCR, qPCR, SPSS, CRISPR, and maintenance of transgenic mouse lines. To excel in my research of neurodegenerative diseaseI have been trained by two neuroscience PhD as well as current medical physicians and have passed all required certifications.

I am also affiliated with a clinical obesity lab at NYU Langone, drafting a medical paper on the effect of obesity on the adolescent brain. Trained by a senior postdoc in neuroscience, I computer code to process brain images and MRI scans using Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Tract Based Spatial Statistics. Resting State Functional fMRI, and analyze all acquired data using SPSS.

I have tutored privately for college students for the last three years. I am familiar with various areas in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. I currently teach a Sunday School class of 24 eighth grade students for the last two years, creating for them a personalized curriculum, and walked each individual student through the high school admission process.

Teaching Methods

Subjects of science are usually dull and often complicated in theory, sought only to be memorized and practiced. Due to the nature of the way scientific subjects like biology, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics are taught, it is often difficult for a student to find interest and preform well. To counter this issue, I interject and provide my students with a background to the plethora of theories and techniques proffered by the humanities and social sciences. I bring the perspectives of the humanities and social sciences to bear within technical discourse. The entire purpose of providing this backdrop is to offer an intellectual map for students, inviting them to think organically, synthetically, and creatively on how various disciplines can be brought together with a view of clarity.

In order to set the most personalized teaching platform for my students, I take the time to understand their ambitions, struggles, and strength in various areas. I target the strategies that work most efficiently for my students so that they can then implement the same techniques independently when they progress their studies and enter new classes.

I pride myself on being flexible in time and schedule. I am available to review and teach material online and in person, available for phone calls and text at various hours of the day. I strive to deliver such a standard of attention and recourses that the student can preform their best and receive a grade that best reflects their efforts. Success in academics intrinsically perpetuates their willingness to work and study hard, where they see and feel the instant gratification of their hard work allows them to keep moving forward and challenging themselves. It is my goal to achieve just this for every one of my students.

About Me

I am of Greek/Egyptian nationality and currently at NYU, tutoring in both the boroughs of Manhattan and New Jersey! I work as a research associate at both Mount Sinai Hospital and NYU Langone, conducting research in neurodegenerative conditions such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, and morbid obesity. Throughout the week I enjoy going swimming, playing squash, running, and spending time with my family/friends.

Aside from my work and schooling I continually strive to challenge myself by eroticizing the mundane, building tension, and finding untapped motivation. My interests falls into things which are slow burning, flood one sense and spill into others, grotesque, visceral, dissonant, disorienting, epistolary, bent, surreal, exhausting but never exhausted.

I have been raised with a balanced lifestyle of hard work and respectable appreciation for people, culture, and society. I sometimes view myself as rigorous to a fault; always revising; creating complex and varied definitions of beauty. It has changed the way I view things and particularly people. I enjoy humbly learning from others and doing what I can for them in return.

Relationship: Student

I am a current undergraduate student at Princeton University. I contacted Dany for help in Organic Chemistry and he was both clear, patient, and incredibly knowledgable. He made the time spent studying feel more of a gratified learning experience rather then something you just had to get through. He drove all the way up to Princeton to meet me and also uploaded lessons and practice material for me online when I was unavailable to meet throughout the semester. I received an A in organic chemistry and he also tutored me the following summer in Biochemistry in which I also received an A. I believe one detail about his teaching style that is most helpful is the tools he provides. Until now, I use some of the same techniques and resources Dan showed and gave to me. I am able to do things much more easily on my own and still preform well at higher academic levels. Dan is an astounding tutor where the student can easily synthesize his methods of teaching across multiple subjects as you move forward. I definitely recommend him. Thanks for everything!!

Relationship: Parent

Dan is by far the reason my son was able to graduate with his college degree. My son was a criminal justice major, he really needed help in statistics and biology so that he could pass and ultimately graduate. Being so inept in both math and science I was unable to personally help him and my son was progressing super slow, failed in his previous attempt in the class and so I asked Dan to help my son through both classes in one semester. One thing about his tutoring method was that it was uniquely tailored to my son. Dan is amazing in his choice of recourses and gives you almost a historical background to tell you the story about how certain things started and how it developed into what we see in textbooks today. Just the manner in which he taught made my feel like he wasn't simply memorizing or being overwhelmed but instead he felt like he had a deeper understanding to the things he learned, being able to recall them easily when it came time to review for an exam with confidence. Dan was also accommodating, he took all my phone calls, emails, stayed with my son late and did not charge me extra because he cared about my son doing well and graduating. He ended up passing both classes, he received an A- in statistics and a B+ in Biology. Until this day I am more than thankful for his help, awesome teacher and cool guy. Highly recommend him for any struggling student!!
