Expertise

Having taught high school math at a DC Public School, I took on the responsibility of teaching SAT prep classes to 11th graders at my school to prepare them for SATs. With experience implementing SAT prep and having received great reviews from my students, I am now sharing my course with other students in the Boston area.

I have experience development custom curriculum in a classroom setting as well as for individual students in high school math courses and SAT prep.

Teaching Methods

Each session typically follows this structure, but is flexible depending on the student's learning needs:
1. Review Assignments - Go over the homework or pre-requisite assignment. Check answers and review questions/concepts that were not mastered.
2. Learning new strategy - Teach a mini-lesson on the strategy / topic of the session. The way I approach this phase is custom to the student's needs, but typically instruction using discovery to let students understand the concept, as opposed, to direct instruction.
3. Practice - provide room to practice until mastery.

About Me

I grew up in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina and graduated from Duke University with a degree in Political Science. After graduating from Duke, I delve into the world of urban education by becoming a high school math teacher in Washington DC through Teach For America. I love working in education, helping students achieve their full potential by crafting individualized plans. I recently moved to Boston to focus on my interest in educational technology and scaling my impact on student achievement. While I miss spending hours upon hours with my high school students, I hope to be able to work with more young minds through Book & Table. In my free time, I love running along the Charles River, exploring the eclectic neighbourhoods of Boston (so different from Washington DC), and trying new restaurants (I was getting bored of eating at the same old restaurants in DC).

Relationship: Student

I was struggling in my Algebra II class and stumbled upon Haiwang's resume in a local ad. The concepts were difficult for me to understand, and I had been falling behind in class. Haiwang tutored me and helped make the concepts easier for me to grasp, and I began to see improvements in my performance. He took the time to understand my thought processes, and where my gaps in understanding were. He catered his lessons to my specific learning style. Haiwang is a great tutor, and I highly recommend him.
