ENGLISH WRITING

Expertise

I have been a private academic English, Literature, and Writing tutor in NYC for over five years and have helped many students substantially improve their GPAs and earn 4's and 5's on their AP exams. My background as a dual English and French Major at Yale, and now a Masters in Creative Writing candidate at Sarah Lawrence College, has deeply informed my knowledge of classic literature covered in AP English/Literature syllabi, as well as shaped my eye for superior analytical writing.

Teaching Methods

To best prepare students for AP English Literature and Composition, I work from the primary classic/modern students will be reading in their classes. I also provide sample passages from past College Board AP exams, so students can most clearly see how the skills they are learning will apply to the final test. A master booklet of literary terms is another essential resource I share with my students, so we have a single comprehensive material for discussing and analyzing all works.

All lessons are theme-based, so a typical lesson involves an introduction to that new theme and putting related concepts to work. For example, if the theme is "Poetry Movements," we will look at sample poems from the Metaphysical, Augustan, Romantic, Symbolist, Modernist, Harlem Renaissance, Postmodernist, Beats, and Confessional traditions. I will discuss the major qualities of each movement and show how these qualities or ideas are present within particular works. All lessons are printed and compiled into a larger anthology for students to keep; this promises a future reference for students to consult throughout the school year and in preparation for the final exam.

Theme-based lessons offer an organized, focused way of discussing each component of the AP Literature and Composition Course, as well as serve as building blocks for the student to master gradually. Through this step-by step, or theme-by-theme, style of instruction, students slowly, yet fully and earnestly, come to see literature as a larger whole (or through a larger analytical lens and framework). It is a lens guaranteed to carry them through challenging college level courses, no matter the subject or intensity level.

About Me

I am currently pursuing my dream as a graduate creative writing student at Sarah Lawrence College and private academic tutor based in NYC. For the past six years, I have worked with a wide range of students,, and am always honing my creative process so I can be most effective at communicating my ideas and helping students excel at their academic studies: whether it is in writing a remarkable personal essay for college applications, crafting an analytical literary essay, or distilling important themes in Shakespeare, poetry, or classic English literature. As a passionate educator, I bring energy and excitement into a room and know how to tailor my approach to meet the individual needs of my students.

Jackie is by far the best tutor I have had. She not only helped me become a better writer, but also mentored me throughout high school and the college admission process. She has the ability to bring out the best in you. She helped me to think more analytically about my essay structure while encouraging my creativity. If you need someone to guide you throughout the college application process and essay writing there is no-one better than Jackie. Not only will she help you craft the best essay you have ever written, she will also teach you valuable lessons about how to distinguish yourself from other writers. I am currently co-authoring a paper with the Dean of Economics at RIT and I doubt that I would have had the opportunity if it were not for Jackie’s ability to bring out the best in me! I highly recommend Jackie to any college applicants who need guidance – even if you already are a competent writer, Jackie will bring out the essayist in you.

There's no question about it, Jaclyn played an invaluable role in my college essay-writing and admissions process. From brainstorming topics to refining details for both my common app and supplement essays, Jaclyn knew exactly what questions to ask and what comments to provide in order to guide my thinking and to stimulate the ideas that I needed to write the strongest essays that I could. Moreover, Jaclyn has vast insight into how to write essays that distinguish the writer from other applicants and fit the qualities that college admissions officers are looking for, aspects that are equally as important as well-written prose. Finally, as you may already know, deadlines are an essential aspect of the college application process. Jaclyn could not have been more flexible with her availability and timely with her feedback. All in all, I highly recommend her to any current or future college applicant who has the desire to succeed in the college admissions process. I currently have the privilege of being able to study at Columbia University, and may not have had this chance if it weren't for Jaclyn's help!
