ENGLISH GRE ADMISSIONS - COLLEGE WRITING LITERATURE FILM

Expertise

As part of my graduate training I have taken many classes on literature and pedagogy--I have been both a student and a teacher in many classes on composition, literature, and film.
At Washington University in Saint Louis I have taken classes on teaching, and regularly attend teaching workshops to strengthen my skills and learn new skills.
I have been teaching for 5 years.
I have taught at Wash U, Fontbonne, and Lindenwood. I have also tutored a wide range of students, from high school students of every age to professional adults looking to strengthen their writing skills or clear up their grammar.

Teaching Methods

I structure my tutoring sessions around the individual. Together we assess the student's needs and how I can best serve them.
Generally when the student needs help with grammar, I will ask the student to write something before our session, which we then go through together. I walk them through the grammatical errors, explain what's wrong and why, and then we go through a series of exercises together to reinforce that knowledge with the goal of helping the student recognize errors before they occur. If I'm helping a student write a college admission essay, I will have them revise the essay before every session, and then we discuss the ideas and how they may more effectively be structured. These sessions are generally shorter and more frequent, as the college app essay benefits from multiple revisions. Literature and reading lessons depend on the needs of the student.

About Me

I received my BA in English Literature with a minor in Art History from the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities. I am currently earning my PhD in English at Washington University in Saint Louis. I have taught an array of subjects at Wash U over the past 5 years, including introductory writing, literature, and film. I love the subjects I study and teach, and I try to impart that enthusiasm to my students. Whether they’re struggling with memorizing facts for a test, writing a term paper, improving reading comprehension, or something else, I help students learn how to both overcome and have fun with those challenges. I can tutor a broad range of subjects, but I am most passionate about writing and reading. When I don’t have my nose in a book, I enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle (running, dog-walking, basketball and softball) and engaging in various arts and crafts, like woodworking and sewing.

Kelly Oman will make an excellent tutor. In the past we have shared a group office, so I have witnessed her interactions with her students during office hours. She is an extremely kind and patient teacher, making sure at several points during conferences that her students understand what she's saying. She has a way of maintaining authority while making students feel comfortable and at ease. I couldn't recommend her more highly!
